Show Notes Transcript

What happens to your body after an accidental intake of gluten when you have celiac disease? Find out in this episode of the Healthy Celiac Podcast as I shed light on just how long it takes for gluten to fully exit your system. I discuss the physiological processes that kick in once gluten is consumed and make it clear that while the physical gluten leaves your system in a matter of days, your antibody levels may take up to four months to normalize.

Living with celiac disease is not just about avoiding gluten, it's about embracing a lifestyle that supports your overall wellness. I delve into the rather unfortunate reality of gluten-related side effects and how they can linger for up to two weeks. As you master the gluten-free diet and establish a safe environment for food preparation, your healing process will progress and those post-glutening symptoms will wane faster.

Speaker 1:

All right, welcome back to this week's episode of the Healthy Celiac Podcast, where we are talking about how long it takes for gluten to get out of your system now that you have celiac disease. So if you are brand new to celiac disease and having to navigate your world as someone that has to eat gluten-free, or if you've been living with it for a while, let's talk about this and answer this question for you. Now, for many people, they accidentally consume gluten and they wanna know how long it's going to take to feel better okay. Or they also have just been diagnosed with celiac disease and they've cut out gluten and they wanna know how long it's going to take to feel better. Now, there's two sides of the coin to this, because once your body has healed after living with celiac disease for some time, you might accidentally get gluten and your symptoms are way worse than before you had your diagnosis. Now, this can be due to a number of reasons. Your body's healing, your body's feeling better and you are just thrown at it. It's like a ton of bricks coming down on you and the symptoms feel worse. And if you've had that in any previous time, you know any previous time you know it feels terrible, okay. So what happens is you consume gluten accidentally, depending on how much you have had. Most of the actual gluten will come out of your body. It'll be evacuated within a couple of days. Okay, so within a couple of days, most of that gluten has passed through your digestive system and has passed out the other end. But it can take around four months for your antibody levels to go back to normal. Okay, so if you were to go and get tested, you know you had a blood test and it would show that you have consumed gluten. Okay, so that can show up four months later not always, but it can be up to four months. It can show up on a blood test.

Speaker 1:

So if you are eating really well, if you have been looking after your body and it's a one-off, you may find that your body will go back to normal quicker than the person who eats junk food. You know it doesn't exercise, doesn't rest, doesn't get a good night's sleep, doesn't look after their mental health. Those people may take longer to feel better. Now, if you accidentally have gluten, you know the gastrointestinal side effects may stick around for a couple of days. Like I said, it can take a couple of days for the gluten to pass through you. But you may find that you have those other side effects for a couple of weeks.

Speaker 1:

Now, when I've been accidentally glutened, I find that I feel like rubbish for around two weeks. I find that, you know, I have the brain fog, I've got the fatigue, I've got the body aches, really, really tired, and that starts to ease off by around the two-week point. So it totally depends. It totally depends on you, your lifestyle, what you're doing. Some people say it takes them even longer and in the beginning it may take you longer to feel better because you might accidentally be having really tiny trace amounts of gluten sneaking into your system.

Speaker 1:

But over time, once you figure out the diet and you know you're on top of eating gluten-free, you're making sure you're not getting the cross contact, you're making sure that your kitchen, your pantry, is really safe for you. You should find that you can get on top of this and start to heal and feel better. And of course there's ways to do this quicker and easier. So you know, make sure that you're focusing on that rather than just eating gluten-free, because just eating gluten-free is not enough, unfortunately. You know, if we've all been told you've got celiac disease, just go and eat gluten-free, but, as you may have discovered by now, that is not enough and it's not the answer.

Speaker 1:

So if you want help with that, make sure you reach out to me via the healthy celiac on Instagram and I can help you with that absolutely because, like I said, it's not enough and you need more guidance than just eating gluten-free. It's as simple as it is. That is not enough and there's more to it. So I hope this answers the question for you today on how long it takes for gluten to get out of your system. And, yeah, you can kind of look at it in your own body and start to feel how you go after accidentally getting gluten. Hopefully that's a very, very rare occurrence for you, but you'll start to see that the more you heal and the better you start to feel those accidental glutenings. You should be able to get over within that two week timeframe and feel better quicker. So, yeah, I hope that helps. Thanks for tuning in and I'll look forward to talking with you again soon. Have a great week, take care bye.
