Speaker 1:

Alright, welcome back to this week's episode, where we are talking about electrolytes and why they are important for human function and the reasons why it's important to know the signs when you might be feeling dehydrated and feeling that you need to have these electrolytes, because if you're not aware of them, you might put these signs and symptoms down to something else. And it's super important because we need electrolytes to be able to function properly in our day to day lives. And if you are someone that gets gluten and you know this does happen to many of us with celiac disease some people not very often, but some people find that they get gluten quite regularly so if you are, you know getting the gastro side of side effects rather so if you accidentally get gluten and then you find that you have the vomiting and the diarrhea, you need to replenish your body with those electrolytes. So today's episode is about teaching you why it's important to reach for a natural electrolyte rather than maybe those more common mass produced ones that we've all heard about, and we'll talk about some of those brands in today's show as well, so let's jump on into it.

Speaker 1:

So what is an electrolyte? So an electrolyte is an essential mineral, so things such as salt, potassium, magnesium, chloride, phosphorus. So these are really important for controlling our nervous system function and for regulating our muscle contractions. So when we have electrolytes, they help keep us hydrated. So have you ever been in a situation where you were so dehydrated and you just felt so thirsty that, no matter how much water you drank, you just couldn't quench your thirst? It probably meant that you needed electrolytes. So we can lose electrolytes in a number of different ways. It's not just from vomiting and diarrhea, so normally we lose electrolytes through urine and sweat. So if you have maybe worked out really hard in the gym or you've been for a very rigorous run or something along those lines where you've sweat a lot, you might find that afterwards just having water is not enough for you. So one of these electrolyte drinks that we talk about today can be a really great option for helping to replenish those electrolytes and rehydrate you. So often when kids get sick, it's really important that we make sure that we help keep them hydrated, and a lot of doctors will recommend things like hydrolyte or petalite or things like those. But they do have a bit of a concoction in them that our body doesn't need, and many of them are quite high in sugar, so we can avoid having that added sugar by making our own electrolyte.

Speaker 1:

So you might have heard of a brand called Gatorade. Many of us know what Gatorade is and basically Gatorade was invented because the Gators, which was a football team from the University of Florida, they were struggling in the heat, so their players were getting sick, they were passing out, they were struggling with nausea, they were losing weight and they weren't performing at their best. So a team put together this product, basically, that they were able to drink, and apparently it tasted like sweat, because that's what sweat is a lot of salt. So the players drank this, what they now call Gatorade, and they went on to become very, very successful team of football players and yeah, they're healthy, improved and their performance improved. So then Gatorade went on to become this massive brand that many of us know worldwide. So instead of reaching for the Gatorade, we can reach for a healthier version and it's something that you can make at home anytime, without having to go to the shops and buy a branded product. And, like I said, you can cut out all the nasties that are often in a lot of those products.

Speaker 1:

So when we talk about electrolytes, we do find them naturally in food. So you will find it in things like bananas, lemons, watermelon, things like that. And that's another reason why a lot of people do reach for watermelon naturally in summer, because their body is rehydrating itself. So my kids love getting home from school on a hot day and munching down on watermelon. So that's a really great option as well, by getting it from your food. But when we're sick, sometimes we don't want to eat certain foods, or if we've been volutened we don't want to eat certain foods. Like it can be hard to actually want to sit down and eat anything sometimes. So this is where this drink of this natural homemade electrolyte comes in and can really support you.

Speaker 1:

So back to how we can lose electrolytes. So we've talked about working out, we've talked about losing it through sweat, but even just simply on a hot day, you can lose electrolytes. So just recently we spent a good portion of a day down the beach and it was really, really hot. We stupidly didn't take any shade with us and I felt absolutely trash afterwards and I drunk water and I had made sure that I was, you know, looking after myself with lots of water, but it just wasn't enough. And this is where this electrolyte drink comes in, because it helps replenish those electrolytes that our body needs to function.

Speaker 1:

If you think back to a time where perhaps you've suffered from muscle cramps often it's actually a loss of magnesium, so you need to replenish that magnesium to be able to get rid of that cramping so cramping something that you struggle with quite regularly have a think about your lifestyle. Perhaps it's simply that you are not getting enough electrolytes into your body. You know we've been. We've kind of had it banged on to us to avoid salt, but we need the good salt that is not highly refined. So we need salt that has got the minerals in it. We don't want to be having table salt, the nasty salt that's had all the goodness taken out of it. So you might be scared of salt and you completely cut that out of your diet and you're not getting enough salts in. So that can be something to kind of look at and think about.

Speaker 1:

Back in my very early 20s I traveled around Europe for a month and it was backward, I was a little bit silly and I pretty much got drunk every single night on that contiki tour, as you kind of do in the early 20s, I guess. Back then and I'm not even joking Every single night on that trip I woke up with major leg cramps. I can still remember it. It was just. It was horrendous, like it literally shot me up in bed every night in agony and just rubbing, rubbing my legs, not like I knew it was from drinking alcohol and it was simply. My body was deprived of the good minerals that my body needed at that time and I was not doing it any favors by getting drunk every night, and you might notice that that's something that happens to you when you have alcohol. You might get muscle cramps. So, again, it's that cramping that can be from the lack of electrolyte, so not always from alcohol, but can be from dehydration and yeah, so that's, that's something to look at as well.

Speaker 1:

So let's talk about some of the symptoms that can be from a lack of electrolyte. So one of them is fatigue. So if you are suffering from fatigue, this can be something to look at. Headaches is another one nausea, muscle cramps, like I said, and low energy, and even if you just how you wake up in the morning and you've got like a groggy kind of feeling, can almost be like a brain foggy kind of feeling, but compare it to a hangover. If you get that feeling where you wake up in the morning you're like God, I feel like I've got a hangover, but you haven't actually had an alcohol, it could simply be that your body is screaming out for some electrolytes. So you could make one of these natural drinks in the morning and start your day off with this, and you'll notice a big difference in the way that you feel. So, obviously, these signs and symptoms can be a whole host of other things, but, like I said, it's just something to be aware of and something to look at, because sometimes we just don't look at this area if we don't have the awareness of it.

Speaker 1:

So let's talk about what is actually in an electrolyte drink. So definitely salt. So I personally recommend that you use pink Himalayan sea salt because, like I said, it doesn't have all the goodness taken out of it. It's got the minerals in there that your body needs to make it worthwhile consuming. And then we want to use some lemon juice, some orange juice, because they have got the electrolytes in them as well and very, very hydrating for your body. Now I'm going to put the recipe for this, with the exact quantities to look at, over on my website so you can grab that by lindawheelandcom. I've put a direct link to that in the show notes and below so that you can go straight to that, because I know that if I say the exact amount and you won't remember it while you're listening to the show, so I will pop that there for you. You can go and go and head over and make yourself your own drink, All right.

Speaker 1:

And the next one is either water or coconut water. I love coconut water, even just on its own. If you had no energy and you couldn't be bothered making the entire drink, even just having coconut water has got a number of electrolytes in it that can be fantastic for just having on its own. So if you were to use coconut water, then you probably don't need as much of a natural sweetener. So I would say reach for honey. Honey is an excellent choice, but if you were just using plain water then you might feel like you need a little bit more of the honey in there. So we'll talk about that in the actual article as well, so that you've got those amounts there to kind of adjust.

Speaker 1:

So yeah, so you mix all of these up and you consume it and see how you feel afterwards, but it's very hydrating. There's no problem with starting your day every day with this drink if you feel like you need it, and you might start to get used to it. If it's something that you want to do every morning, or it might be something that you want to drink after you've been to the gym or you've had a day out in the sun and you feel like you just need to replenish those electrolytes. So, yeah, it's a handy one to know about because, yeah, like here in Australia, it is so hot at the moment. Where I am in South Australia, we have had a lot of hot weather and, yeah, it's definitely something that sometimes water is not enough and some people say that they just drink and drink and drink and it's just not enough to hydrate. So this drink is an excellent option for, yeah, getting that hydration happening and getting those electrolytes into your body. So I hope this is help. This is definitely something worth looking at and seeing how you feel.

Speaker 1:

If you haven't already grabbed yourself a copy of my daily health tracker, highly recommend that you grab yourself one of those. They're available worldwide on Amazon, so you just simply type in Belinda Whealon is the easiest way to find it. But what's great about these daily trackers is you can write down even if you just do it for a month or so. You just write down how you're feeling, what you're eating, what you're consuming, what your day is like, things like that and then you can start to see, you can backtrack, you can kind of look back and say, oh, hang on a minute, I ate this or I drank this, or I did this exercise and I had these signs and these signs and symptoms, or I felt this particular weight. And you can start to really see what's causing these problems for you, because it's not always celiac disease, it's not always gluten. There's so much else that we need to look at when it comes to our health and our bodies that is so quick to always blame celiac disease, and it's not always the case.

Speaker 1:

So this is why I love educating you guys on these other topics and these other areas, because it can truly make massive difference to the way that you feel and the way that you look at your lifestyle and just adding in these tiny little changes to really improve your health and your future. So I hope today's episode has inspired you to look at what you're doing and consuming and your habits. And, yeah, like I said, go to Amazon and grab yourself a daily health tracker If you haven't got one yet. There are three different versions, so I have one for men, one for women and one for children. So obviously I don't want children filling them out.

Speaker 1:

If you're a parent of a child, I want you to do that for them so that they don't get caught up on all of that side of things. But as a parent, it's excellent to do for your child to kind of track how they're feeling as well and what's going on in their diet and starting to pinpoint things that work for them and don't work for them. So, always available on Amazon and, yeah, you can check that out at any time. But otherwise, thank you so much for listening to today's episode. Like I said, I love sharing this information with you and if you have any feedback or you just want to reach out to me, you can do so at any time.
