So on last week's episode of the healthy CEL podcast,
Speaker 2:I was talking about 15 gluten free foods
Speaker 1:That could still be causing
Speaker 2:Issues
Speaker 1:With your digestion.
Speaker 2:And my husband and I were enjoying a smoothie
Speaker 1:Bowl
Speaker 2:Today. And I was just chatting with him about the differences between, um, eating a
Speaker 1:Smoothie bowl versus
Speaker 2:Drinking a smoothie and how much more beneficial
Speaker 1:It is to your digestive
Speaker 2:System. And lo and behold, He turned around and said, wow,
Speaker 1:That's perfect for sharing with your
Speaker 2:Audience. And you should teach
Speaker 1:People
Speaker 2:That on your podcast.
Speaker 1:So
Speaker 2:Here we are. I thought I'd
Speaker 1:Share with
Speaker 2:You the benefits of
Speaker 1:Why
Speaker 2:A smooth smoothie bowl
Speaker 1:Is
Speaker 2:Really great for
Speaker 1:You with celiac
Speaker 2:Disease and why it's
Speaker 1:Actually better
Speaker 2:Than having a smoothie.
Speaker 1:So
Speaker 2:Let's jump into those reasons and help inspire you
Speaker 1:To
Speaker 2:Start consuming a smoothie bowl.
Speaker 1:So, firstly,
Speaker 2:What is the difference between a smoothie bowl and a smoothie? So a
Speaker 1:Smoothie smoothie, we obviously
Speaker 2:Know what
Speaker 1:A smoothie
Speaker 2:Is.
Speaker 1:Don't we, we,
Speaker 2:We can picture it in a cup or a glass with a straw and we drink it and it's gone. Whereas a smoothie bowl, as it sounds, you eat it out of a bowl and you don't drink it with
Speaker 1:A straw, you actually eat it
Speaker 2:With a spoon. And when I say
Speaker 1:Eat it, you are
Speaker 2:Actually chewing your smoothie bowl. Okay.
Speaker 1:So
Speaker 2:What is different is
Speaker 1:It's a little bit
Speaker 2:Thicker than a regular smoothie.
Speaker 1:So it,
Speaker 2:It's got more of
Speaker 1:A,
Speaker 2:A thicker consistency based on the way that you
Speaker 1:Make it. So you don't add
Speaker 2:Water
Speaker 1:To your smoothie
Speaker 2:Bowl and there's not as much liquid
Speaker 1:Added to
Speaker 2:It. So when I make
Speaker 1:Smoothies, I usually
Speaker 2:Add something like water Or some coconut milk
Speaker 1:Or some coconut water,
Speaker 2:Something to make it a thinner and easier to drink through a straw.
Speaker 1:Whereas we don't do
Speaker 2:That as much with a smoothie bowl. Now you can put lots of different and things in your smoothie bowl. And then what's normally done is you sprinkle different things on top
Speaker 1:Of your smoothie bowl
Speaker 2:And it can be
Speaker 1:Fruit. It
Speaker 2:Can be nuts and
Speaker 1:Seeds. It can be, you know,
Speaker 2:Shreded coconut, things like that, and maybe a drizzle of maple syrup. And it just adds another element to it where
Speaker 1:You actually have to chew it. So let's talk about why
Speaker 2:That's beneficial.
Speaker 1:Now, when we talk about
Speaker 2:Digestion, digestion actually starts
Speaker 1:Before your food hits your stomach. So
Speaker 2:When you
Speaker 1:Chew food, you are
Speaker 2:Actually creating more
Speaker 1:Digestive juices.
Speaker 2:Okay? So
Speaker 1:If you just
Speaker 2:Swallow some thing without chewing it,
Speaker 1:Your digestive juices,
Speaker 2:Haven't had much of a chance to Swirl around in your mouth and swirl around that food and
Speaker 1:Get
Speaker 2:That
Speaker 1:Digestive process
Speaker 2:Happening. So when you are chewing
Speaker 1:A smoothie bowl,
Speaker 2:So let's just say you take a mouthful of your smoothie bowl and you chew it around in your mouth before you swallow it. That's actually creating more digestion before it hits your stomach. It's pretty amazing, really? So when you are cooking, your body is starting digest that food before you have even eaten, because we start to smell the food. We start to see the food and our body gets ready to digest that food. It's very powerful and it's very different to, if you were to go and order some take away food. So let's just say you phoned up, you order to take away food. You go and pick it up and you eat it straight away. You will not digest that food as well as if you had prepared your own food because your body hasn't had that initial sense of smelling and seeing the food and being prepared for it. It's, it's quite incredible when you feel about it. So again, preparing a smoothie bowl, seeing it smelling all the beautiful fruits, all the things that go into it, moving it around your mouth, chewing it up, digesting, digesting, digesting. So it's incredible to think that just by changing the way that you eat can change the, that your body digest food. Now, what I absolutely love about having a smoothie bowl is you are eating something that is completely nutrient dense. It is full of nutrition. It is full of goodness. It's going to make you feel amazing. You're gonna feel great to start your day. When I say that you don't even have to have them for breakfast. They're fantastic for an afternoon snack or lunch. You don't just have to have'em for breakfast, but they are an incredible start to your day because they're feeling they're delicious, they're nourishing, and it just makes you feel good to start the day with something healthy. I don't know about you, but when I start the day on a healthy foot, I tend to follow it through for the rest of the day. So it can help create better habits as well when we eat well, first thing in the morning, I think that's very powerful as well. So yeah, so it's something that's, I, I highly recommend that you give it a go and it's a way of getting those nutrients into your body while you're healing. So if you are very new to having celiac disease and you are worrying about what to eat and you're struggling to find different breakfast ideas, because it's probably one of the questions that I hear a lot is I just don't know what to have for breakfast. I just don't know what to eat. And people reach for things like gluten free breads, which are usually full of fat. They're very high fat, the gluten free bread. And a lot of them have a lot of sugar in them. And there's not that much nutrients that we get from eating bread. Anyway, um, obviously we get fiber and lots of goodness from that side of things, but as far as being nutrient dense, there's, there's not as much of that nutrient dense profile coming from gluten-free bread.
Speaker 1:So
Speaker 2:Replacing gluten-free bread for breakfast, making sure you just reaching for, you know, packaged gluten free cereals, a smoothie bowl can do so much more for your body than any of those packaged items ever can do.
Speaker 1:So
Speaker 2:I, I love eating as much
Speaker 1:Real whole foods as possible.
Speaker 2:I know it's not always Easy for a lot of people, But even if you just added this in a couple of times a week and see how
Speaker 1:You feel, you know, if
Speaker 2:You work during the week
Speaker 1:To say,
Speaker 2:You've got a job Monday to Friday, it doesn't even take that long to make in the morning. I kid you not. It might sound like, oh wow,
Speaker 1:This is a lot of work, but
Speaker 2:They Actually don't even take that long to make.
Speaker 1:So give it a go. See how you feel.
Speaker 2:See what the difference is when you eat this way. Feel. If it nourishes you
Speaker 1:Feel, if it fills you up,
Speaker 2:If you feel more energized and go from there because Like anything, if you don't try it, you don't know. You've gotta give things a go
Speaker 1:To see how
Speaker 2:You feel and how your body reacts. Okay?
Speaker 1:So
Speaker 2:If there's something that resonate with you, I'm gonna give you guys the opportunity to download
Speaker 1:A free ebook that I've put available
Speaker 2:For you on my website. And that way you can get some recipes off me and play around with them and, and see what
Speaker 1:Works
Speaker 2:For you. There's no hard and fast rules. When it comes to smoothie bowls, you can change up the ingredients. You can have different fruits in them, but it's one of those things that once you've got a
Speaker 1:Base
Speaker 2:Idea of how to make them, you can play around with them and you can make them your own.
Speaker 1:So go
Speaker 2:To my website, Belinda wheelin.com and download that freebie, because I want you to try these. I want you to, um, take photos of'em and put'em on Instagram tag in your photos, send me your photos. I wanna see what you're making. I wanna see what you're creating and let me know how you
Speaker 1:Feel. Because
Speaker 2:Like I
Speaker 1:Said, so powerful,
Speaker 2:So nutritious,
Speaker 1:So good for you.
Speaker 2:And I honestly think you really like them. So
Speaker 1:Yeah,
Speaker 2:I want you, I want you to give it a go and let me know. So I hope that that really helped you and inspires you, you to try something different. And I hope it helps you think a little bit more about food. Next time you go to eat and think about digestion and think about how it starts
Speaker 1:Before
Speaker 2:You've even taken the first
Speaker 1:Bite.
